13 FEBRUARY 1942

Black Friday, 13 February, 1942, was a bad day of shelling and bombing.

Most of us realised it was pretty near the end.

Sunday, late, all guns were silent and it was very ominous.

On Monday morning we were informed of the unconditional surrender by General Percival.

General Percival on way to surrender

So then it was a case of "Now what?"

TROOPS TO CHANGI

Finally, we learnt of the troops' march to Changi Prison but, for one week, the hospital was allowed to stay as it was.

From the windows we watched the triumphant Japanese Army, led by tanks, march up Orchard Road into the city.
