At this early stage, the Japanese were too busy taking over Singapore and moving on to greater conquests to worry about us, apart from supplying rice and little else.

After about three weeks, Sid Creek, George Strode, Mick Warren and I from "A" Company, were going to Singapore on a work party for the Japanese.

Eventually, there were 300 of us, mostly 2/18 under Captain George McLachlan of 2/18 [who, I eventually learnt, was a great friend of Cari Hanns and came from Scone area where I think he still lives] also few other odd "bods" to make up numbers, including some A. S. C. guys.
