Granny Rennie, as she was called, and is still spoken of, was born in County Clare in Ireland, Mary Keleher, and immigrated to Australia in the early 1860s. Granny Rennie In Moreton Bay, now Brisbane, she met and married Joseph Delore, who was born in Bordeaux, France.
They moved south and met John Wright at Bungwahl and when John came to Tuncurry the Delores came too.
They had eleven children (Francis, Margaret, Joseph, John, Andrew, Jane, Eddie, Sophia, John Patrick, Mary and Reuben James).
Joseph died in 1880.
Mary then married Charles Rennie.
Mary had the gift of a healer and her name became a legend and it is said she assisted in the birth of over 1,000 children.
In 1901, the local people gathered to show their appreciation for her sterling work and presented her with a purse of sovereigns.
In 1908, while at her home on Rennie Island, Mary's clothes caught fire and the subsequent burns proved fatal. The whole area mourned the loss of her cheery disposition and soft touch.
Jane Delore, her daughter married Joseph Mayers and continued her mother's work. Jane had no formal medical training, but local medical men saw fit to have her granted a medical certificate on the basis of her practical knowledge.
